Clay modeling

This first one was kind of odd to me, I tried to create something with a lot of unbalanced properties, but at the same time it sort of looks balanced with the ball on the back.

This second one was the most challenging, I cut off a third of the block of clay, and then ripped it in half, and I kind of liked how it turned out. I decided to smooth it out but it surprisingly took like 30 minutes to try and smooth it out and it still isn’t that smooth. There are a bunch of different sides to this piece.

This last one might be my favorite, I feel a lot of tension in this one, which I like. It provides emotion towards the viewer and for that reason it is probably my favorite.

  1. Your first piece makes me think so much more than I ever imagined I would while looking at clay. From the second I looked at this piece, I saw the skeleton from The Nightmare Before Christmas (even though I’ve never seen the movie) carrying a present or something in his hand. I also see some kind of crane with the sphere representing a person controlling it.

  2. Henry, Interesting that the pieces you find most compelling have this sense of strained balance, forms extending off from the base shape in expressive ways an appendage, stretched out…. Think about how one can do that when we move to the planar piece. The one I prefer is the middle form, something about the implication of geometry while also looking like a piece of flint or a rock formation. Good work.
