- The colorful plaid button-down is the loudest shirt in my closet, yet it is also one of my favorites. It was handed down to me three years ago after my grandfather passed away. (Don’t feel sad, he lived an awesome life!) The shirt stands behind the other objects and acts as the foundation for the arrangement, just as my grandpa acted as the foundation to my life. I always get compliments whenever I wear this shirt, and it reminds me to feel confident about who I am. While I never saw my grandfather wearing this shirt, I’m sure he’s laughing at me wearing it now.
- The container of Old Bay is a beloved seasoning from my home state of Maryland that is used to season crabs. I have many great memories of picking blue crabs with my family and friends around a big table covered in old newspapers. While I personally don’t like eating crabs (a fact that my family still makes fun of me for), I use the seasoning on other foods ranging from French fries to cooked vegetables. The seasoning is a taste that reminds me of family and home.
- The baseball sitting in the front pocket of the plaid shirt is one that I caught at an Orioles game in Camden Yards after the batter hit a foul ball. I was at the game with my parents, and we were celebrating my twentieth birthday before I returned to Lehigh for the fall 2018 semester. Whenever I feel stressed at school, the baseball reminds me of the happy and calm summer night at the stadium.
- The hardhat hanging above the shirt was given to me at a welcome meeting for freshman after I declared my major as Civil Engineering. My time in Lehigh’s Engineering program has given me some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences while encouraging me to look beyond what is presented in the class room. I wear this hardhat every time I help with research at the ATLSS Lab, and it reminds me that nothing is completed without diligence and hard work.
- The framed “Crawfest” poster is a picture that reminds me of pure joy. I received the poster when I was at a music festival with my sister four years ago. We won a raffle to meet the band, Moon Taxi, and also got our posters signed. I can clearly remember dancing with my sister later that day when it was finally Moon Taxi’s turn to play; all of my sisters friends remained seated. The poster reminds me of my free spirited sister and the importance of freely dancing, despite what others might do.
- The pair of hiking boots is something that I use a lot in Pennsylvania when I go on hikes with my friends. With the current pandemic, I am always looking for safe ways to get out of the house, and these boots have provided the best way to do just that. These hiking boots are also something that I inherited from my grandfather a few years ago. The boots not only remind me of the great hikes that I went on with my grandfather, but also make me think of the many hikes that are still yet to come.

I think this composition is very interesting because of how the objects come together to almost look like a human. I also like how the hat is placed because it gives me the feeling of someone hanging up their hat at the end of a day, symbolizing hard work. I noticed also that the poster looks like a staff hybrid you could hold but also continues the line of sight down through both shoes.
The choice to use the shirt to organize the objects was good. You have personified the form, and we read it as a stand in for you. Limited but personal. Hanging it all on the wall was a good choice, the shadows remind us of the volume of the forms, which contrast with the flatness of the “body”. Excellent description of the objects and their meanings. I might have nestled the baseball on the top of the hiking boot.. maybe, it looks a little awkward in the breast pocket of the shirt. Think about the lighting for your other pieces. Indoor lighting makes everything very warm in temperature and we want a more neutral light.
