Environmental Installation

Tree Separation – Farrington Square

I started my walk around my dorm which has a courtyard right outside and includes a lot of greenery and trees. This is where I gained a lot of inspiration because there were so many trees and also a leaf wall surrounding the yard. The branches sticking out from the leaf wall made me think about about what would happen if trees grew from leaves instead of the other way around. So I decided to gather as many branches from the surrounding area and play with the idea.

This is the result of that idea. I wanted to showcase the branches coming from the leaves as if they grew from them. I call this tree separation.

Protruding, Scenic, Contradicting

  1. The way you positioned the branches almost makes it look like it belongs there, but by looking at the surroundings you can tell it is man-made. I find it interesting that the branches look like they are climbing up the wall and I think it also animates your piece. I would have liked to see more contrast so the sticks would have stood out more because it is kind of hard to distinguish right now.

  2. Nicely executed. The image of your piece from the side is particularly effective. Very subtle, I do wonder if the branches had been stripped of their bark if that contrast would have enhanced your piece. and I think contradiction just about sums it up! Good work.
