Environmental Installation

In my backyard I have a small evergreen forest where we have a hammock set up that I like to read in when it’s not too buggy out. I decided to use found objects so fallen pinecones and snippets of tree branches that stayed green (they really live up tho their names). The tree branches looked like miniature trees so I decided to plant them and create a forest made for ants. I also collected a lot of the fallen pinecones and created a winding path that ended up looking like those rainbow wild corn kernels from above (although a more monochromatic color palette because I really like earth tones and monochromatic). I thought the patterning on the pinecones looked interesting so I added a close up photo.

“Naturalistic”

“Miniature”

  1. The theme behind your piece is really interesting and I think your adjective “miniature” really fits. It almost reminds of the little towns people build as collectable art pieces. I also really like how you photographed the last picture because even though you’re going for miniature, it makes the piece seem huge but at the same time not. I almost wish you had taken the first picture from the same kind of angle to reinforce the idea of being a tiny forest.

  2. I think that the contrast of the bright green tree branches among the fallen pine needles helps this piece to stand out. The alignment of the pinecones reminds me of a bird flying in the sky; the texture of the pinecones also causes me to think of bird feathers. Even though this piece is not moving, I think that the placement of the pinecones is effective at conveying motion.
