Indoor Installation

For this piece I wanted to give a sense of things suspended in space. I first thought to attached objects from the ceiling but being short (and too lazy to move a chair around an entire room) I decided to create a sort of labyrinth using the stairway banisters. I later gave this meaning (as I did not have a meaning behind it before installing the design because I’m not a mastermind genius). The stairway is usually somewhere that we rush through, we use it as a corridor or path to another place we actually want to spend time in, but this installation literally stops you in your path to actually observe and appreciate your stairs (although at the end of an especially long days I wish they were escalators instead). The objects suspended in the stairway spider webs are little coronal brain slice tracings I made with alcohol ink on mylar sheets (it’s from a summer internship: “Brain Visualization”– digital exhibition coming out early October!). So therefore I call this piece:

“Suspended in Thought”

As a side note, my cat thought I made the entire installation for her and decided to help out by constantly trying to deinstall the entire thing.

Here are some additional shots of my cat admiring my installation. Or I’m hoping it’s admiration… she might also hate them which could explain why she was so keen on deinstalling them so quickly.

  1. I think that the use of the thin mylar sheets was very effective at changing how I viewed the stairwell. I really like how the sheets appear to vanish at the right angle and then suddenly reappear, just how thoughts enter and leave our minds. I also really like how the vibrant colors made the brains jump out.

  2. Your piece is interesting because it has a sort of story behind it. At first glance the viewer might think the art hanging from the strings is just flowers or colored paper. However, after reading your explanation we can see that it has more meaning to that and figuring out they’re brain slice drawings reveals a story about yourself. It adds more dimension and and creativity to the piece and I really like the idea.
