I started this assignment by not thinking at all about what I wanted the final form to look like. I created seven simple shapes, and then merged them together in a somewhat random configuration, not worrying about the composition until the last two shapes were added. I knew that I wanted there to be a hole that was at the center of the arrangement, but everything else was just a guess. I then smoothed the shapes together to create a piece that had no seems or sharp edges. (1-4)
For the next piece, I tried to create a plan before I started molding the clay. I wanted this piece to be geometric, with sharp angles and rectangular components. However, after I had achieved what I had envisioned (5-6), I disliked the final product and began changing the rectangular building blocks. I started to break the pieces in half and distort the rectangles by bending and twisting them. After molding the clay to the point that it was almost unable to hold its shape, I had arrived at a hybrid piece that started as a concrete idea, and was then modified by listening to the clay.(7-10)
I really like your post because you showed us how you make the pieces from small pieces to the whole work. I really like your idea of combing basic shapes together to make interesting pieces.
These kind of look like they fit together and they look rather animated with the way you photographed them. They are also very smooth and clean cut.
