I enjoyed carving more than modeling. I liked played around with different depths and curves. I prefer the curved edges and shapes as apposed to hard edges and corners. Smoothing was slightly tricky with this piece because I tried to steer away from a base but each time I worked on a side the smooth edged that I had just made picked up bits of carved clay or smashed into the edge of the mat. Overall I think what i enjoyed most was making each side it’s own new form, or at least that was my goal in carving.
The three photos staged on wood are my edited pieces. I really struggled trying to play around with the edges to move away from a more angular form to a much organic curved form. Reshaping the edges really helped to set the piece in a way that changed the look entirely.
Despite the squareness of the piece I really like it. The circles and holes carved into it add a sense of movement and even though it is rectangular it still looks like a different shape from every angle. This piece also really goes well with your theme from our last assignment with the stone henge but this is definitely more fun. It kind of reminds of me a playground and the tunnels little kids climb through.
I really like the hole in the middle. The light goes through the hole is so beautiful. The circle around the hole is also interesting. But I think it is better if you can curve the circle deeper.
Nice development. Taking that corner off really helped to change the rectilinearity of the carving.
