Clay Subtraction

“Impact”

My piece is called impact because it makes me think of something hitting the group and the debris flying up through the air and surrounding the object. While making this piece I started by carving out a giant hole in the center and then kind of free formed the “arms” you see surrounding it. With the bottom I did the same thing and just started carving out random shapes within it. On one side if also experimented with seeing how it would look if I carved inwards and made it sort of concave but it didn’t really work out and you can’t see it too well from any angle.

  1. The last picture is my favorite, it makes my eye want to see more of the figure. Although I didn’t see a molar from yesterday’s piece I really like how you’ve transformed it from an abstract statue on a base to a piece that creates movement and flow through the various sized shapes coming from the main piece. I also think it was a really good decision to not smooth the entire piece because the scraping lines and random indentations add texture that makes it almost appear as tree bark.

  2. I like that your piece does not have a flat base, instead, it has a very flowy and smooth one. My favorite picture is the third one. You show the inside of it where it has a pointy thing. Overall your piece has a very nice movement and I enjoy it a lot.
