For this project, I focused on the basic shape of a circle that had been stretched into a helix. I then tried to mirror this shape with small pieces of paper. These wedges each have a point that is oriented on the outside of the circle, and when each of these points are connected, it forms another helix. I approached this goal by gradually changing the size and geometry of the 29 paper wedges to slowly create this larger shape. Once I had completed the original idea, I realized that the structure was unstable. I then decided two add two semicircular pieces of paper to brace the sculpture. At first, I was not excited about adding the two semicircles, but after looking at the completed sculpture, I think they help to emphasize the final shape.

Jack your piece is really amazing. Even though you said you spent a lot of time fussing over the little details your piece looks almost effortlessly cohesive. It’s almost as if all the pieces are connected because they fit so seamlessly together. Your usage of a black background was also very clever because it brought the attention to the negative space around your piece which was the whole concept of this project. Great work!
Excellent presentation of the piece, the photo editing really enhances the form and calls attention to the solid as well ast the void. I really feel a sense of occupied (or occupiable) space versus unoccupied (or un-occupiable) and is interesting from each vantage point. The work looks almost architectural but is also reminiscent of some futuristic flying object and is both clearly designed and well executed.
