Title: “2 Down”
I called this piece 2 down because I think this hand pose is generally considered to be rock music associated, but for me it reminds me of playing baseball, raising up my hand to signal to my teammates across the outfield that we had 2 outs. I did not want to title it “2 Outs” because if this is the title it is obvious the piece is referring to baseball. The “2 down” title however is much more vague and could lead someone to different interpretations on what the meaning of the piece is. It is also a direct contrast to the content of the sculpture given that the hand has 2 fingers up- not down.
After the first time I showed my hand to the class I wanted to really focus on the skin and how it folds and bunches up in certain places. I also tried to show the pulled skin between the thumb and index finger as well as the way the skin on each finger bunches up and overlaps under the bend of each knuckle.
Another focus I had was to of course make the hand stand on its on (unlike originally) and ensure the proportions of the wrist and hand were accurate.
I tried to smooth the skin as best as i could but it is pretty hard to do with the clay.
