Ready Mades

I believe that sketching out the concept was more successful than when I tried to create what I was imagining. I have attached my concept sketches to show how I was imagining the sculpture. I think that the gloves lacked structure that I was imagining to create the mountainous landscape I was hoping for. I don’t know if there was something I could have done to starch up the gloves because no matter how many I layered or scrunched up it did not have the final effect I was looking for. I tried to take photos with very tight, close ups to emphasize the miniature world I tried to recreate.

The ‘meaning’ for this piece is how the discarded disposable gloves during the beginning of the pandemic were being littered everywhere outside and created these little mountains of trash. So I had small figures seated around these glove mountains to represent how isolated we are feeling during these times. Also at first I did not like how monochromatically grey everything was (it was hard to see the figures from far away), but I grew to like it. Because let’s be honest. It feels pretty bleak and grey right now so I find it appropriate for the meaning and feeling I was trying to convey. Also my figures are just fat little boys and girls because whoever hasn’t turned to comfort food and packed on a few pounds during this is a freaking super human.

  1. I think this looks really cool especially because just looking at it quickly, you just see either like white garbage bags or white sheets. After looking at it closer you realize that they are actually medical gloves. And finally you see that there are mini figures climbing through the gloves which is really cool. Almost looks like it belongs in a comic book or something.
