I chose to speak about the contemporary artist; Sylvie Fleury. Fleury is a Swiss female artist, she was born and currently resides in Geneva. The style Fleury tends to lean towards is taking basic concepts or objects and adding her own interpretation. A lot of the pieces she uses are actually high end fashion products such as shoes, bags and makeup. But what she adds is a gilding over the purse, or texture on the shoes, or even a blown up version of a makeup pallet. Her focus is on “consumer culture” and the value western society places on “things”. Ironically Fleury tends to bring attention to the massive amounts of money people will spend on material items, yet she sold a gilded trashcan for $11,000! I was initially drawn to Fleury’s work because I like the minimal, clean look her work presents. Even her glassy mushrooms, while they look very wild and psychedelic are so pristine and delicate looking. I think it’s always so interesting to see that art doesn’t have to be a monumental structure or painting, anyone can create art with a purpose.
