I think the reason Mariko Mori, a Japanese artist and sculptor, is so impressive to me is because her art is the perfect representation of the things that are most challenging for me. A big theme in many of Mori’s pieces is the visualization of invisible or imperceptible forms. From her spiraling white “invisible dimension” to “Wave UFO,” Mori displays her remarkable talent for visually communicating non visual elements. In Wave UFO in particular, she combines neuroscience with art and installation in a water droplet shaped spaceship, projecting viewers brainwaves onto a screen above them so they can physically see their thoughts come to life in shape and color. I always struggle with imagining abstract interesting forms, and Mori is so insanely skilled with doing so that she can visualize OTHER people’s brain waves into interesting forms FOR them. Mariko Mori is so inexplicably good at communicating whats in her mind despite it being jam- packed with complex astrophysical theory. If I can someday be a tenth of as good at communicating my mind as she is hers, I will be more than satisfied.
