I liked this project a lot more than I thought I would. Doing the fingers, however, drove me crazy. I think I had a pretty well done finished hand like 2 months ago, but got frustrated that it wasn’t quite right…I ended up overworking that hand, getting even more frustrating, and ripping the fingers off. My hand has sat fingerless in my car’s center cupholder since then. I came back to this project and forced myself not to overwork it. While I may not be as pleased with the fingers, I’m at least happy that I didn’t ruin it. I might come back to the fingers and start to add more details because I think that may help, but I also like how much information can be given with such little detail. Most interesting to me about this project was how important the slightest curves/forms are in making the clay model seem realistic. It definitely opened my eyes and motivated me to really break down subjects and what my eye is observing.

I like how hands have such a personality to them! From your piece I can see your hand as alert, stiffened up as if ready to catch a baseball or support a chin. There is good sculpting of the tendons in the back of the hand, it really shows the tension and where the support would be coming from in a real hand. I think the thumb may be a tad bit too large? But every hand is different and it still looks like a very believable hand! Fantastic work and I’m so happy you stuck by it and continued to work on it even when you got frustrated (I wish I had that kind of attitude, as I have a whole room of just failures I will never return to).
I think you did a really good job on the back of the hand and I’ve definitely been there where you kinda just need to let a project sit for awhile before your ready to come back to it. I like how the hand is positioned in a way that makes it look like its helping to lift up a table or something. I do think the palm area is a bit too meaty near the fingers but otherwise good job.
I really enjoy this both as a sculpture of a hand but just as an organic sculpture in general. It really reminds me of a seat and I think it would be so interesting if it were to be carved out of an old tree stump of some sort. I also think that the angles you photographed it at are super interesting and really give it an old world feel. The only critique I might have would be the area in which the photos were taken, I love the light you had but the background gives it a sort of eclectic feel.
