Abstract

What captured my attention about Diana Al-Hadid’s work was her unconventional use of the female figure. She plays with what’s there (positive space) and what is absent (negative space). This interesting interplay of matter and the lack of matter personally intrigued me. As critiques have pointed out, it makes the viewers think about the fragility …

Claymation

Yay!! I did it! I am not going to lie I only half believed I could pull this off. I originally tried to use my clay hand made from the harder white clay and realized it was too difficult to move and would constantly crack so then I had to create another new hand from …

Bernini Mask

My god this will be the last time I try to create a human face out of paper mache. The paste worked well just took a while to dry between layers so I ended up using some hot glue to build up the volume quicker. Some places I had over-built the volume and had to …

Multiples

These took FOREVER to fold! And to make things more frustrating they were difficult to keep tied to the embroidery hoop and kept getting tangled. Therefore I name it: “Entangled Flock” I like the movement that the sculpture makes and it makes a rustling noise like dried leaves (very on theme for fall).

Ready Mades

I believe that sketching out the concept was more successful than when I tried to create what I was imagining. I have attached my concept sketches to show how I was imagining the sculpture. I think that the gloves lacked structure that I was imagining to create the mountainous landscape I was hoping for. I …

Paper Construction

Pretty unhappy with the outcome. I wanted to pay around with the texture of the inner part of cardboard (the wavy part). And before I painted the cardboard it kept rigid and created interesting shapes and loops, but after it was painted it just became floppy and never regained the rigidity it had before even …

Carved Clay

I think once I added more to the loopy parts of the sculpture it really helped create a less square-like form. I had trouble smoothing out the small holes and preventing cat hair from clinging onto the clay.

Clay Modeling

“Hug” For this piece I had cut off slabs of the clay off the large block and smoothed them out. I tried keeping them as straight slabs and having them stack on each other like a teepee but couldn’t get them to stay so I rounded them out, having them ‘hug’ into a more spherical …

Indoor Installation

For this piece I wanted to give a sense of things suspended in space. I first thought to attached objects from the ceiling but being short (and too lazy to move a chair around an entire room) I decided to create a sort of labyrinth using the stairway banisters. I later gave this meaning (as …
